I am a pure finance person- help!
I never imagined myself at a non finance firm. But given the job market, which still sucks, I have to take a new offer that I received from a securities law firm. This is far from my dream job, which was always to be a traditional financial analyst at a bank, HF, or PE firm. But realistically, not happening for me. Maybe unless I go to B School, which is definitely my short term plan.
I landed a job at a small law firm specializing in securities litigation. I don't know what this will do for my career, but I feel very uneasy that this will not read well on my resume. Does it seem too disjuncted to go from finance (I spent almost 2.5 years in finance) to this law firm? I'll be a "financial stock analyst" at the law firm, monitoring the news/market for potential case opportunities. I am 99% set on going back into finance- but is this a good interim job until B School? Or am I making a bad career move here?!

Well, a job is a job, so
Well, a job is a job, so that's a plus in this environment.
That said, you have a unique opportunity here. Securities litigation is something worthy to know and understand, particularly if you have an interest in getting into risk management. It's an opportunity that will allow you insight into one aspect of finance that is overlooked outside of the "Legal and Compliance" groups. Have you started yet? Are you doing more than just trolling for potential cases? Are you getting any experience being involved in the litigation proper? Even if it's only a layover until you return for school, it's something most of your peers won't have, so look at the positive in it.
I am not in the finance
I am not in the finance world, but I think you are fine. The skills you are using seem to be transferable and you will gain some substantive knowledge of securities laws and perhaps learn about the legal loopholes you find in the footnotes of public filings. That being said, even if you were having trouble transitioning back, B-School should serve as a nice springboard to get back in.
Business School is made for
Business School is made for people just like you that are looking for a career change. Just make sure you don't slack at the job because it isn't your "dream job". To get into a top MBA program you need to show a record of leadership (inside and outside the office), so you need to perform well.
you said you spent 2.5 yrs in "finance" - can you be more specific? why did you leave that job?

thanks for the help, all.
thanks for the help, all. was expecting a lot more negative feedback, but i guess it wouldnt be too bad to take this job.
@jdoasis- i was in middle office for credit derivs at a BB and then moved to a start up hedge fund as a trader/analyst. i morphed my role into a desk analyst, running basic quant models on broader market. also looked at company financials, but very minimally.
Bah fine, I guess I can help
Bah fine, I guess I can help you out for that cause
I'm not sure I understand -
I'm not sure I understand - you spent 2.5 years in exactly what job in finance and now do exactly what at the law firm? Honestly, bschools don't give a shit WHAT you did, they look at GPA + GMAT + experience + references + story.
Post your resume on razume, redact personal info, and then post here and WSO with your story for a more info: I also assume you realize that after bschool, you won't have the same exit ops as ugrad recruiting, yes?
