Using Law School Transparency figures, the guys over at Constitutional Daily have compiled an interesting list of schools with higher underemployment numbers than their full time employment scores.

Well, we all know that some schools are worse than others, but the schools you'll find after the jump just seem to dominate being bad.

NYC Lawyers: say hello to 50 hours of pro bono work

A new requirement for would-be NY lawyers seems to be causing quite a stir. What do you think monkeys? Is mandatory Pro Bono work good or bad?

[quote]Starting next year, New York will become the first state to require lawyers to perform unpaid work before being licensed to practice, the state’s chief judge announced on Tuesday, describing the rule as a way to help the growing number of people who cannot afford legal services.

Dewey & LeBoeuf, goin belly up

bellly up.jpg

With merger talks falling apart, partners and vice chairmen jumping ship, and staff getting laid-off left and right, I'm really baffled how people could even think that Dewey & LeBoeuf could still pull through this mess.

Especially when this little piece hit the wires:

Quote:
At a Tuesday afternoon meeting in a multi-purpose room at the firm, one group of associates were told that next Tuesday would be their last day, according to a Dewey lawyer in attendance. More meetings with groups of associates were set for later in the afternoon, according to the lawyer.

[quote]On Monday, secretaries were told that Friday would be their last day.

"Given the egregious nature of petitioner's wrongdoing, as well as a pattern of conduct occurring over many years, we can conceive of no circumstances under which we would ever grant her admission to the practice of law in the state," the court said in an unsigned opinion.

Proceeds to lose 400 grand.

Quote:
Milavetz Gallop fell victim to the scam when someone claiming to be a 40-year-old Korean woman hurt in Minnesota told the firm she needed help securing a 400,000 legal settlement, report the Minneapolis Star Tribune and Courthouse News Service. The firm received a settlement check for the amount, received assurances it had cleared, and forwarded $396,500 to a Hong Kong bank for the client.

This seems to be pissing off a lot of dudes. Is it all much ado about nothing? Or will this actually change how people deal with China?

[quote]China’s Justice Ministry has issued a requirement that new lawyers and those reapplying for licenses swear an oath of loyalty to the Communist Party, another step in a campaign to rein in lawyers who continue to challenge the political and legal systems by which the party maintains power.

Politics: Yay or Nay?

lol

Thought this was pretty interesting:

[quote]Are even the most opinionated among us now turned off by politics? In a Kaplan Test Prep survey that we just released a few days of 758 pre-law students conducted between December 2011 and February 2012, 38% said they would consider running for political office – a marked decline from the 54% who reported they were thinking about becoming candidates in 2009. Within that 38% lies a glaring gender gap: 51% of male pre-law students would consider running, but only 29% of female pre-law students would consider it. Note: Nearly 1,000 UC Berkeley undergrads applied to law school last year.

And so is aggravated organized procurement of prostitutes apparently as DSK makes headlines once again:

Quote:
Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, was charged by three investigating judges in the northern French city of Lille with procurement in a prostitution ring, prosecutors said.

The charge stems from an investigation into a prostitution ring linked to the Carlton hotel in Lille. Investigators uncovered evidence women had been hired to travel as far as Washington to have sex with the then-chief of the IMF.

Trader sues JPMorgan over Decimal Point error

jd12's picture
by jd12 User's RSS Feed (Senior Monkey, 85 Banana Points Points) on 3/29/12 at 8:23pm
common sense.jpg

Quote:
Kai Herbert, a Switzerland-based currency trader, is suing JPMorgan for about 580,000 pounds ($920,000), his lawyers said at a trial in London this week. The original contract said Herbert’s annual pay would be 24 million rand ($3.1 million). JPMorgan blamed the mistake on a typographical error and said the figure should have been 2.4 million rand, according to court documents.

After discovering the error, Herbert ditched JPM (this was mid 2010 mind you) and has been unemployed since.

I'm totally speechless over this so I'll leave you with Charles Ciumei, a lawyer for JPMorgan who pretty much hit the nail on the head during their cross-examinations:

Intellectual property and China

Was never a fan of China’s intellectual property theft laws, but this is ridiculous:

[quote]Foreign companies have long faced difficulty enforcing their IP rights in China, but, in recent years, multinationals have also increasingly found themselves on the other side of enforcement actions brought by Chinese companies claiming patent or trademark infringement.

"[Chinese companies have] realized that they can give foreign companies a bloody nose too," says Elliot Papageorgiou, a partner in the Shanghai office of U.K. IP firm Rouse.

Defense Lawyer pulls out the Chicken Salad Sandwich defense

sandwich

Effectiveness called into question as verdict still hasn’t been reached.

[quote]A lawyer for an Alabama state senator accused in a vote-buying case defended his client with shouts and a sandwich during closing arguments on Tuesday.
Lawyer Jim Parkman “broke out the courtroom theatrics,” the Birmingham News reports. Parkman shouted “not guilty” at times and ridiculed a casino developer who testified for the prosecution.

The developer, Ronnie Gilley, testified that Parkman’s client, Sen. Harri Anne Smith, changed her vote on a gambling bill as a result of campaign contributions. Parkman ridiculed Gilley’s testimony that he suddenly recalled Smith's role in 2009 bribes while eating a chicken salad sandwich.

Launchpad IGNITION: Lawyerfy

Edmundo Braverman's picture
by Edmundo Braverman User's RSS Feed (Senior Chimp, 17 Banana Points Points) on 3/13/12 at 4:29am

I've been sued a fair number of times over the years. To me it's just the cost of doing business - you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. But in each of those experiences, the least pleasant aspect was dealing with my own lawyer. My lawyer is expensive and has a knack for making me feel like a small fish in a big pond. I hesitate to even pick up the phone to call her for an update because I know a 15-minute conversation is going to cost me $125.

I now know I'm not the only one who feels this way. And I now know that it's a problem for my lawyer, too.
